Partner Spotlight: Taos Fly Shop

We’re grateful to recognize Taos Fly Shop as one of the generous partners supporting our annual fundraiser auction this year.

Taos Fly Shop donated a guided fly fishing trip to help support our chapter, and we truly appreciate that generosity. Support like this helps make our fundraiser possible and strengthens the work we do throughout the year in conservation, education, and building a stronger angling community here in Northern New Mexico. Taos Fly Shop has deep roots in the region. The shop was founded in 1980 by Taylor Streit, who has guided anglers in Northern New Mexico for decades, and today the operation continues under the leadership of his son Nick Streit.

What we especially appreciate about Taos Fly Shop is how closely it is tied to the fishing culture of northern New Mexico. This is not just a storefront or booking desk. It is a long-running local fly shop and guide service built around the rivers, canyons, and mountain streams of this part of the world. The shop describes itself as friendly, helpful, and non-intimidating, and that kind of approach matters. It helps make fly fishing more welcoming, whether someone is just getting started or has been fishing these waters for years.

Their guided trips reflect the remarkable variety of water available around Taos and beyond. Taos Fly Shop guides on waters including the Rio Grande, Conejos, and Rio Costilla, and the business is also permitted on a broad range of public lands and state parks while maintaining access to select private water as well. Their trip offerings range from half-day and full-day wade trips to full-day floats and even multi-day Rio Grande box camp float trips into the rugged canyon. That range gives anglers a chance to experience everything from approachable local water to more remote and unforgettable adventures.

We also appreciate the sense of place that comes through in the waters they fish. Their descriptions of the Rio Grande, Conejos, and Rio Costilla make clear how special these fisheries are, from the deep canyon stretches of the Rio to the meadow water and hatch-driven fishing on the Conejos to the Rio Grande cutthroat country of the Costilla. These are the kinds of waters that shape anglers and create lasting memories, and it is clear Taos Fly Shop has spent many years helping people get to know them.

The guide team itself adds a lot to that story. The staff includes longtime New Mexico guides, skilled teachers, and people with strong ties to the region. Their bios repeatedly emphasize patience, local knowledge, and the ability to help anglers learn while having a genuinely enjoyable day on the water. Nick Streit also continues to teach through classes and guide schools, and the shop currently offers both its Guide School and Instinctive Fly Fishing School. That educational piece feels especially meaningful in a community like ours, where so much of fly fishing is passed from one person to another.

That same spirit shows up in the way clients talk about them. Testimonials highlight knowledgeable, patient guides, helpful staff, and positive experiences for both experienced anglers and newcomers. One review specifically describes guide Ron Sedall as deeply knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging on local rivers, while another praises the relaxed and friendly atmosphere for beginners. That kind of feedback says a great deal about the role a good fly shop and guide service can play in helping people feel at home in the sport.

Community partnerships like this mean a great deal to our chapter. Businesses like Taos Fly Shop are part of the wider network of people helping keep fly fishing strong in New Mexico. They introduce people to rivers, help anglers build confidence and skills, and carry forward a local angling tradition that is deeply connected to stewardship, conservation, and shared experience. When partners like Taos Fly Shop support our fundraiser, they help strengthen not just our chapter, but the broader community that cares about these waters and their future. Their ongoing fishing reports and classes are another part of that contribution, helping keep anglers informed, engaged, and connected to the resource.

We are thankful to Taos Fly Shop for their generosity and for being part of that effort. Their donated trip will be an exciting opportunity for one lucky auction winner, and we’re proud to recognize them as a partner in this year’s fundraiser.
