This past weekend, Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited hosted a successful fly casting clinic, bringing together anglers for a day of instruction, practice, and community.
The clinic focused on practical casting fundamentals, including roll casts, overhead casting, timing, line control, and efficient casting mechanics. Participants received hands-on coaching and individual feedback designed to help them build skills they can use on New Mexico waters.
One participant, Seth Shteir, shared especially generous feedback after the clinic. Although he has been fly fishing for more than 40 years, he noted that the class helped him rethink his casting mechanics and rely less on force and more on form, timing, and the natural leverage of the fly rod.
“This was a completely amazing course which totally changed my casting for the better,” Seth wrote. “The instructors were superb — fun, great communicators, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. You all knocked it out of the park!”
Seth also noted that the clinic helped him improve his roll cast, regular cast, and understanding of which casting skills are most useful for New Mexico fishing. Just as importantly, he came away having met fellow anglers and future fishing partners.
Truchas extends special thanks to our instructors for generously sharing their time, patience, and expertise. We are also grateful to the Department of Wildlife, formerly the Department of Game & Fish, for its support and for providing the venue for the clinic.
Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event a success. We look forward to offering more opportunities for anglers to learn, connect, and build confidence on the water.
