What is Trout Unlimited?

Trout Unlimited (TU) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation, protection, and restoration of North America’s coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Since its founding in 1959, TU has grown into a leading force for healthy rivers and thriving trout and salmon populations across the United States.

TU is powered by a unique combination of professional staff, volunteers, and grassroots members—over 300,000 strong—who work together to ensure that future generations can experience the joy of clean water and wild fish.

Our Mission

To bring together diverse communities to care for and recover rivers and streams so all life can thrive.

At the heart of Trout Unlimited’s mission is the belief that healthy watersheds are vital not just to trout and salmon, but to people and communities as well. TU takes a science-based approach to conservation, combining on-the-ground restoration projects with advocacy, education, and volunteerism.

What We Do

  • Restore Streams and Habitats
TU leads hands-on restoration efforts that improve river health—from removing obsolete dams to planting native vegetation along streambanks. These efforts help rebuild spawning grounds, reduce erosion, and cool water temperatures.
  • Protect Coldwater Fisheries
TU works to conserve intact habitats through partnerships with landowners, government agencies, and local stakeholders. By preserving pristine watersheds and headwater streams, we safeguard critical ecosystems before they’re at risk.
  • Advocate for Smart Policy
TU advocates at the local, state, and national levels for science-based policies that protect clean water, public lands, and fishable waters. Our voice is respected in Congress, statehouses, and regulatory agencies.
  • Engage and Educate
Through programs like Trout in the Classroom, veterans’ initiatives, youth camps, and community events, TU connects people of all ages and backgrounds to the importance of conservation and the joys of fly fishing.

A National Network, Locally Driven

TU’s strength lies in its grassroots chapters and councils, which operate in communities across the country. Local volunteers lead projects on their home waters—monitoring stream health, organizing cleanups, engaging with local leaders, and sharing the fly fishing tradition.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler, a conservationist, or simply someone who cares about clean water, there’s a place for you in the TU community.
