Fall Casting Clinic with the Truchas Chapter
Almost every fly angler’s story begins the same way: a desire to simply make a better cast. We catch fish with whatever technique we happen to have, but there is a particular gratification in laying out a nuanced presentation in a challenging spot, and chasing that feeling is how a lot of us fell for this sport in the first place. This fall, we would like to help you take a step down that road.
On Saturday, October 24, the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited is hosting a Fall Casting Clinic at Magers Field, and we are opening it up to everyone in Santa Fe, not just chapter members. If you have never picked up a fly rod, this clinic was built for you. If you have been at it a while and want to tighten your loop, there is plenty here for you too.
The morning is taught by Fly Fishers International (FFI) Certified Casting Instructors. FFI’s Certified Casting Instructor program has spent more than thirty years training instructors in a shared understanding of how a cast works, the mechanics and even the physics behind it, and how to teach it well. There are around 1,500 CCIs teaching in some forty countries today, and as a group they are famously eager to share what they know. Our past clinics have been made possible by volunteer Certified Instructors traveling in from as far as Albuquerque and Taos.
You will spend the morning working through the fundamentals in small groups, moving between stations: the basic casting stroke, the roll cast, mends and curve casts, presentation, and the concepts that tie it all together. Go at your own pace, ask all the questions you want, and leave with real casts you can take to the river. Who knows, it might even be the start of your own journey toward certification.

- All skill levels welcome, beginners very much included
