Trout in the Classroom Kicks off for 2025

On January 10, eleven volunteers from Truchas Chapter completed delivery of rainbow trout eggs to the remaining schools involved in this year's Trout in the Classroom program. This adds to the 3 schools that received rainbow eggs earlier (October 2024) and 2 that received Rio Grande Cutthroat fry the previous day. Teachers and students will raise these fish in chilled tanks set at 50 degrees until they release thrm back into the wild in field trips in May. Lesson plans will include water chemistry and the nitrogen cycle, trout reproductive cycles, macroinvertebrates and water purity, genetic diversity and conservation / climate change - adjusted for the age of the students. This program is in conjunction with NM Dept of Game and Fish.

Many thanks to Truchas volunteers Denise Mizer, Patrick Delaney, Aaron Dailey, Victor Nelson, Carlos Hernandez, Jeff Weber, David Howard, David Wheelock, Sansom Williams, Arnold Atkins and Bob Foehring. If you would like to assist with spring field trips (fish release and macroinvertebrate sampling), please email TIC Coordinator Mike Jozwiakowski at mikejozwiakowski@gmail.com
