DESCRIPTION:Join the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited for an open casting session\, a fun and welcoming way to sharpen your fly casting. This is an informal\, skills-based gathering with casting drills\, distance and accuracy games\, casting challenges\, and plenty of time to ask questions or work on specific techniques. Whether you are brand new or an experienced caster\, the activities are designed to be useful at every level. \nCertified instructors Eric Callow and Tanner Hall will lead the session\, offer critique and suggestions\, and introduce casters to the American Casting Association accuracy games. Good casting takes practice\, and it goes a lot further with passionate instructors and a like-minded community. This session provides both. \nThis is a regularly planned casting series\, so come out\, meet fellow anglers\, and make it a habit. \nWhat to bring: Your own rod and reel if you have them. SUMMARY:End-of-Season Ales & Tales at Second Street Brewery
DESCRIPTION:The cottonwoods are turning\, the season is winding down\, and just about everybody has a story from this year they have not told yet. That is what October 28 is for. Our quarterly social comes back to Santa Fe\, to Second Street Brewery on Rufina\, from 5 to 8 PM. \nThis is the one where the year gets talked through. What worked and what did not\, which water surprised people\, what everybody is tying this winter\, and where everybody is headed next season. A fair number of chapter plans start at these tables long before they ever reach an agenda. Bring your best story from this season. Accuracy is encouraged but not enforced. \nOne ask\, and it is the whole plan: bring somebody with you. A partner\, a fishing buddy\, the coworker who keeps saying they want to try fly fishing one of these days\, a neighbor who just moved to Santa Fe and does not know the water yet. If everyone who usually turns up brings one person\, this becomes the best one we have had. That is not a big lift\, and it is genuinely how these things grow. \nAnd if you are the one being brought along\, or you are coming on your own without knowing a soul\, you will be fine. People assume a chapter event means walking into a room where everyone already knows each other. Half the table met the other half exactly once. You do not need to fish\, own a rod\, know a nymph from a streamer\, or be a member. Nobody is going to put you on a committee. Turn up\, say hello\, ask whatever you want to ask. \nAles & Tales moves around the region each quarter. SUMMARY:Fall Casting Clinic with the Truchas Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Almost every fly angler’s story begins the same way: a desire to simply make a better cast. We catch fish with whatever technique we happen to have\, but there is a particular gratification in laying out a nuanced presentation in a challenging spot\, and chasing that feeling is how a lot of us fell for this sport in the first place. This fall\, we would like to help you take a step down that road. \nOn Saturday\, October 24\, the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited is hosting a Fall Casting Clinic at Magers Field\, and we are opening it up to everyone in Santa Fe\, not just chapter members. If you have never picked up a fly rod\, this clinic was built for you. If you have been at it a while and want to tighten your loop\, there is plenty here for you too. \nThe morning is taught by Fly Fishers International (FFI) Certified Casting Instructors. FFI’s Certified Casting Instructor program has spent more than thirty years training instructors in a shared understanding of how a cast works\, the mechanics and even the physics behind it\, and how to teach it well. There are around 1\,500 CCIs teaching in some forty countries today\, and as a group they are famously eager to share what they know. Our past clinics have been made possible by volunteer Certified Instructors traveling in from as far as Albuquerque and Taos. \nYou will spend the morning working through the fundamentals in small groups\, moving between stations: the basic casting stroke\, the roll cast\, mends and curve casts\, presentation\, and the concepts that tie it all together. Go at your own pace\, ask all the questions you want\, and leave with real casts you can take to the river. DESCRIPTION:We return to Chihuahueños Creek in the fall for another round of exclosure maintenance — and this trip adds something special: a full restoration tour of TU’s work in the area. \nOn Day 1\, volunteers will caravan to the north side of the Jemez\, hike to the exclosures\, make repairs\, and camp for the night. Day 2 features a shuttle-assisted hike of approximately four miles back through the full length of the restoration project — a rare chance to see the scope of what TU and its partners have built\, from the headwaters down. SUMMARY:Willows & Wild Trout Volunteer Trip\, Rio San Antonio
DESCRIPTION:Now in its fourth year\, this beloved event combines two of the better ways to spend a late-May weekend in northern New Mexico: restoring a cutthroat trout stream in the morning\, and fishing it in the afternoon. \nThe Rio San Antonio — located west of San Antonio Mountain\, off of 285 (not the San Antonio in the Jemez) — is home to Rio Grande cutthroat trout and has been a focus of TU’s riparian restoration efforts. Volunteers will plant willows along the streambank each morning to improve cover and bank stability\, then pick up fly rods for an afternoon on the water. Camp is set above the river\, and carpooling from the highway is available for those without AWD or 4WD vehicles. \nThis one sells itself. \nWhat to bring: Your own camping tent and gear. SUMMARY:Exclosure Repair & Willow Planting\, Chihuahueños Creek (Jemez Mountains)
DESCRIPTION:Chihuahueños Creek sits on the north side of the Jemez Mountains\, a long drive from anywhere — which is exactly why it still holds a viable population of native Rio Grande cutthroat trout. TU has been working to restore both the creek and its cutthroat population\, and that work depends on maintaining the livestock exclosures that protect riparian vegetation from grazing pressure. \nThis trip is a two-day overnight. On Day 1\, volunteers will caravan to the site\, hike approximately two miles round-trip to the exclosures\, and make repairs. Day 2 brings willow planting inside the exclosures — a critical step in stabilizing streambanks and improving habitat for cutthroat. The site tour alone is worth the drive. \nWhat to bring: Your own camping gear. DESCRIPTION:The Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited is excited to be hosting its first annual “Freeze Your Trout Off” Fish outing on November 22\, 2025 at the picnic grounds located on Rio Chama below Abiquiu Dam and we would love for you to Join us. \nWhat is Exactly is the “Freeze Your Trout Off” fish outing?\nIt is a day of relaxed fishing and commendatory for all our members\, their friends\, and anyone else who would like to show up. We invite everyone to come out and fish their favorite spots on the Chama\, then about 11:00 we are all going to meet up for a potluck lunch at the picnic area about 1 mile below Abiquiu Dam. We have a couple members that have volunteered to whip up a pot of Chili\, a couple that are bringing the deserts and there might even be some hot coffee to warm you up as well. Who knows what will be on the menu. Bring your drinks and favorite dish and come join us for some great food\, fun\, and whopper fish stories. \nFishing is on your own schedule\, so if you want to start fishing early then come to lunch\, or if you wanna drag out of bed late\, join us for lunch and fish the afternoon you can. Heck\, fishing is not required\, so if you prefer\, just come hang out and join us for lunch\, you are more than welcome. \nIf you are the adventurous type and only use your GPS\, the picnic area is located at 36.238516\, -106.417451 \nIf you want to know more about the outing please contact me\, Boot Pierce\, at bootpierce2000@gmail.com and I will fill you in on all the details.
